Job Overview: The Clinical Coding and Charge specialist is responsible for administration and management of all components of the procedure charging process including overseeing revenue and usage reports and the appropriate charging of the inventory management system. As a data specialist ensures accuracy and quality of data is collected. Creates accurate data reports for analytical and reporting purposes.The EP Coding & Charge Specialist may perform the following duties:General Charge Specialist Duties:Maintain and update all functions related to procedural codingEnsures accurate and timely updated to the EP Recording system and EPIC. Run accurate and timely reports.Coordinates communication with Chargemaster Services to verify any changes made to the inventory and procedural chargingKnowledgeable to all coding changes that could impact revenue and or billing.Knowledge and training in multiple computer systems (i.e. EPIC, Microsoft office, EP Recording System, MIDAS, Excel, Outlook)Current knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, and procedures related to third party payers, JC, CMS, and other regulatory agencies.Demonstrates ability to interpret, recommend, design and implement policies and procedures for compliance with regulations and standards.Performs administrative duties related to Hospital Information Systems. Works workques in a timely manner.General Data Duties:Conducts medical record reviews and abstraction for designated core measure dataPerforms daily (EPIC and EP recording system) clinical documentation audits assessing completeness and documentation that meets regulatory requirements and standards of care.Ensures complete data collection (both paper and EMR) and entry into an electronic database.Participates in the analysis and evaluation of collected data.Establishes needed reports utilizing Microsoft Office and hospital data collection systems.Functions as resource in formulating action plans related to findings.Maintains accuracy, integrity, and reliability of the data to support the national data registry process.Collects appropriate quality performance data and clinical information for electrophysiology procedures.Analyzes and evaluates data and clinical information to identify quality issues and trends.Maintenance of Daily Procedure Coding/Supply Charges:Ensure daily audit of all procedure charges completed in the Electrophysiology Lab.Reviews clinical documentation in order to assign diagnostic and procedural codes to patient accounts.Monitors documentation turnaround time and productivity and follows up on clinicians on outstanding procedure reports.Ensures accurate, timely, and appropriate assignment of CPT codes for purposes of billing, reporting, research, and compliance with regulatory and payer guidelines.Make appropriate adjustments to patient's procedural charges after reviewing the daily chargesConducts and tracks staff procedural recording errors.Review Revenue and Usage reports to verify that all charges were accepted completely and accurately by the charge capture system.Reviews case mix data and provides reports as needed.Assists with or provides education regarding the relationship between coding and documentation as needed to clinicians.Inventory Management:Collaborates with materials management and purchasing to ensure accurate inventory, hospital pricing and charging of patient accounts.Works with clinical team and management to ensure appropriate supply inventory levels are being maintained.Assist with the management of expiring supplies.Performs cycle counts on high expense supply items to ensure accurate inventory dispensing and charging occurs.Provides reports on inventory usage as needed.Professional Development - Assumes responsibility and accountability for professional growth and development. Contributes to the professional development of peers, colleagues and others.Participates in 75% of business and other hospital meetings as appropriate.Prepares for certification specific to work area of professional practice when eligible.Participation in chosen professional organizations, conferences and research is encouraged.Participates in performance improvement initiatives.5) Productivity - Understands factors related to cost and effective outcomes when planning and implementing patient care.Manages workload effectively.Understands and maintains awareness of fiscal responsibility by utilizing staff, time, equipment, and supplies appropriately.Department Projects:Assist in the creation and support of existing and new department projects to continually strive to improve current processes.Develop at least one performance improvement project annually.Assumes responsibility of accurate and data collection for specific reports and ensuring their distribution to the appropriate areas ie: radiation coverage and dosage.Responsible for abstracting any and all clinical data requested of managementEducation: High school diploma or equivalent required. Completion of a recognized course of study for health information practitioners or coding specialists preferred.Licenses and Certifications: Certified Coding Specialist preferred but not required with emphasis on Electrophysiology Lab procedures. Certification in coding upon hiring encouraged.Experience: 5 years' experience in hospital charge capture review, medical record review, claims auditing, and in working with regulatory and policy compliance issues related to federal and state programs. Minimum 2 years of coding experience preferred.Required Skills & Knowledge: Strong understanding of HIPAA laws and requirements as they relate to review and reporting documentation. Advanced in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, and Excel.
